Biographical / Historical
Deborah Lydia Neil was born in 1883 to John Henry and Eliza Jane Neil in Monroe County, Iowa, as the youngest of three siblings. Neil’s father died a year after her birth, and her mother remarried in 1891 to William Henry Anderson. In 1903, Neil married George Washington Scribner with whom she would have five children. The Scribners would move to a farm south of Eddyville, Iowa, following a fire that destroyed their first home. George passed away in 1947, and Deborah continued to live in Eddyville until her death in 1976.
Helen Q. Scribner was born in 1905 in Monroe County, Iowa, to George and Deborah Neil Scribner as the second of five siblings. She received her education from the State University of Iowa (now the University of Iowa) and would work for various insurance and actuarial firms in Illinois and Washington, D.C., before moving to Fresno, California, in 1945. Scribner would marry William Hale Scribner that same year and begin teaching mathematics in public schools in California and later at South Dakota State University. Following her retirement in 1976, she would move to Albia, Iowa, to live with her sister, Thelma Scribner Hohl, until her death in 1982.
Allen Kent Scribner was born in 1938 to George Eugene and Sylvia Scribner in Fort Dodge, Iowa, as the oldest of two siblings. Scribner received a graduate degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1962 and served overseas with the Army in US-occupied West Germany from 1962 to 1964. He married Sue Ellen Pollman in 1968. In 2003 using genealogical research, Scribner was the first of his immediate family to become a member of the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR).
