Biography

Helen Q. Scribner was born in 1905 in Monroe County, Iowa, to George and Deborah Neil Scribner as the second of five siblings. She received her education from the State University of Iowa (now the University of Iowa) and would work for various insurance and actuarial firms in Illinois and Washington, D.C., before moving to Fresno, California, in 1945. Scribner would marry William Hale Scribner that same year and begin teaching mathematics in public schools in California and later at South Dakota State University. Following her retirement in 1976, she would move to Albia, Iowa, to live with her sister, Thelma Scribner Hohl, until her death in 1982.
