I am a Beautiful Monster: Poetry, Prose, and Provocation / Picabia, Francis ; Marc Lowenthal, translator ; Serner W., 2007

Identifier: CC-47533-68541
Scope and Contents The review of this book by Jori Finkel in Art in America February 2008 follows below. If Andre Breton was the pope of Surrealism, then Francis Picabia was surely the playboy of Dada. It's not merely that he was born into the European elite, it's that he used his good fortune for such purposes as avoiding the front lines of World War I, maintaining and recuperating from his opium addiction, traveling extensively and living extravagantly. It's not just over the years he had three wives (two legal and one common-law), it's also that he had the bit of beginning one relationship before ending other, while enjoying dalliances on the side. At one point, while living in the South of France, he found his life so complicated that he had to his install new lover, his children's Swiss nanny, on his yacht in the harbor of Cannes, while his second wife remained at home.Something along the same lines could be said his art as well: the man got around. For example Chapter X, p.6 depicts a reproduction of Herbert's Easter Wings along with a German adaptation of the poem. The rest of the chapter reproduces typewritten shaped poems, phonetic poems, constellations, sound poems based upon punctuation marks and permutations. Chapter XI contains poems on printed reproductions of polygraph paper and advertisements. -- Source of annotation: Marvin or Ruth Sackner.

Iconographs / Swenson, May., 1970

 Item
Identifier: CC-02204-2244
Scope and Contents According to Swenson, these Iconographic Poems were composed with the shape as an integral part of the poem's meaning. In this respect, they fulfill the definition of Concrete Poetry, viz. poems that are to be seen, as well as read and heard.Kirkus Review (1970): As the title suggests, Miss Swenson's fourth book of poetry reaffirms her belief in the possibilities of calligraphic verse (which makes graphic use of page space and type to produce a pictorial symbol of the poem's subject). Thus, we have an ode to ""An Old Field Jacket"" printed in the shape of a chevron patch; ""The Blue Bottle"" arranged in the design of a, yes, bottle; and the double helix of ""The DNA Molecule"" represented in stairstep coils. Beyond these diagrammatic experiments, Miss Swenson is also interested in writing original poetry, which except for a few well-worn conceits and cliches (""My eye my I,"" ""the bridge of Discover,"" ""animal beauty"" of the black man), she manages to do. Many will find the...
