According to Alec Finlay, this book included all the poems Finlay wanted reprinted as of 1996. It reprinted 46 of the 48 poems in The Dancers Inherit the Party, the Scottish poem entitled, Glasgow Beasts, that was illustrated with papercuts by John Picking and Pete McGinn, and Orkney Lyrics illustrated by John Arran. Robert Creeley contributed a brief foreward and Alec Finlay a long afterward that provides historic information about Finlay's early poetic years. -- Source of annotation: Marvin or Ruth Sackner.

The word, "new" in ink has been added to the last line of the poem on page 33, which does not appear in the other copy held by the Sackner Archive. The print and cover design were made by Zeljko Kujundzic. This copy was owned by Edwin Morgan, a well-known Scottish poet. The book was subsequently published by Fulcrum Press in 1969 and advertised as a 1st edition, a fact disputed by Finlay that led to a lengthy legal battle between him and the British Arts Council who sponsored Fulcrum Press.This pamphlet was advertised in Migrant No.8, 1960 for $0.25. -- Source of annotation: Marvin or Ruth Sackner.

Scope and Contents This painting depicts a portrait of Pella Erskine-Tulloch in Phillips' studio holding a handbound edition of Phillips' "Dante's Inferno." Tom Phillips describes this painting in "The Portrait Works" as follows: "The title of the picture 'The Dante Binding' refers to the book on which the sitter rests her arms. It was the last thing in the picture to be painted since it did not exist until the final three or four sittings. During the months this portrait took to paint, Pella Erskine-Tulloch and I were involved in designing the three volume binding for the Talfourd Press edition of Dante's Inferno. This sample blank volume was the final prototype. It was a triumphant moment in which the silkscreen cloth and spine-titling I had designed came together in her superbly structured binding: the mere presence of the book (replacing substitute books in earlier sittings) was enough to resolve the picture and propel it towards completion. The central text is about Jeff, a factory worker, whose life unravels when the "other" Jeff sabotages his job, relationships, and even dreams. Boyd (Sacred Hearts) opens with a life-or-death struggle between them in a graveyard and circles back in the "end." This battle might seem like a metaphor for an id-superego conflict or even multiple-personality disorder, but it's actually more complicated than that-the "real" Jeff ends up fighting back, complicating the double's more exciting life and leading readers to question who the "real" Jeff is. Over half of the book consists of brilliant short stories, allegories, and fairy tales contained in 14 appendixes and 22 annotations.
