Rivera selected The Temptation of Saint Antony, did an impressive drawing of the work which was enjoyed by the rest of Rollins' class to the point where other artists' versions were shown. The latter included Schongauer, Brueghel, Bosch, Callot, Redon, Ensor, and Ernst. The influence of these images and the text on Rollins group over the years led them to do their own interpretations of the work as watercolor studies, paintings and finally prints at Crown Point press. The Thing, No. 3: Kota Ezawa - Translations, 2008

 Item — Box 242: [Barcode: 31858072460383]
Identifier: CC-49158-70198
Scope and Contents This publication is edited by John Herschend and Will Rogan. Kota issue utilized the entire THING. It was our first issue in which the issue itself was the whole. Much of Kota's work has been about interpretation and modes of translation. And his contribution to THE THING was not an exception to this. His issue consisted of the standard THING box stamped in Cyrillic (Russian), a letter from the editor translated in to Mandarin, and a simple white cotton baseball cap with Arabic Text embroidered onto the front. Subscribers were only given a very small clue as to what the translation might be (a URL in English, buried in the Mandarin text). The result for many became a search for meaning and an interaction with a text that had symbolic feel but little relevance to their daily lives (unless they spoke the languages). Many subscribers took the letter to their local Chinese restaurant and asked for help, or they wore the hat around for days and weeks until someone told them what it...

 Item — Box 242: [Barcode: 31858072460383]
Identifier: CC-58725-10001960
Scope and Contents

The Thing Quarterly is a periodical in the form of an object. It's like a magazine, except that each issue is conceived of by a different contributor and then published as a useful object. David Korty (born 1971, California) makes work that explores the everyday objects, scenes, and terrain of his living environment. His distinct geometric visual language takes this quotidian subject matter and pushes it towards abstraction, flattening it into a complex depiction of commonplace geometry. Korty's paintings oscillate between these abstractions and their identifiable subjects. What results is a sophisticated dialogue between the nonobjective and the representational, a way of seeing the surrounding world and reinventing it. Korty earned his B.F.A. from Rhode Island School of Design and his M.F.A. from the University of California, Los Angeles. He has exhibited widely throughout the United States and Europe. -- Source of annotation: Marvin or Ruth Sackner.
