Biographical / Historical
Ione “Shad” Shadduck was born in 1923 in Mattoon, Wisconsin. After graduating high school, Shadduck worked as a bookkeeper and stenographer during World War II. She then joined the Women’s Army Corps and served in the Korean War . Following her discharge, she attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison earning a BS in Kinesiology. Shadduck then taught physical education in Waupaca, Wisconsin, advising several clubs and coaching the girls’ basketball team. She taught in Dos Palos, California, from 1961 to 1963 before returning to school. Ione Shadduck earned an MA in 1964, then earning a PhD in 1967 from Michigan State University. After completing her doctorate, Shadduck was recruited by Drake University to develop their Women’s Athletics and Physical Education departments. She coached and taught throughout her time at Drake. When the women’s and men’s departments merged, Shadduck was not selected as the director, despite being more experienced and qualified than the male candidate who was selected. After this, she enrolled in Drake Law School , where she graduated in 1976, passing the Iowa Bar Exam in 1977. Ione Shadduck practiced law at a private firm in West Des Moines until her retirement in 2000. Throughout her legal career, Shadduck represented many women in divorce and child custody cases. She was one of the first to use expert witness testimony to highlight the economic value of homemaking and consider that in divorce proceedings. She also argued that the best interest of a child should be considered in custody cases , which set an important precedent in Iowa. She also represented women who faced gender-based discrimination in the workplace. Shadduck was a founding member of the Iowa Women Attorneys Association and the Iowa Women’s Political Caucus. She served as an attorney for the Iowa Civil Rights Commission and the Iowa Civil Liberties Union. In 2019, Shadduck was inducted into the Iowa Women’s Hall of Fame. Ione Shadduck died in 2022.
