Biographical / Historical
Maggie Werner-Washburne was born in Fort Madison, Iowa, and grew up in a Mexican neighborhood in the town. Werner was involved in choir and musicals. She attended Stanford University and earned a BA in English in 1971. After traveling around Central and South America and spending several months in Alaska, Werner realized she wanted to study plants. She earned her MS in Botany from the University of Hawai’i. Maggie Werner-Washburne then went on to get her PhD in Botany and Biochemistry from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1984 and completed four years of postdoctoral work there. She then began her career as a Professor of Biology at the University of New Mexico (UNM). Her research focused on yeast genomics. Throughout her career at UNM, she was involved with numerous organizations and efforts to increase engagement of underrepresented students in science and math fields . Werner-Washburne served as President of the Society for Advancing Chicanos/Hispanics and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS). She also won the SACNAS Distinguished Scientist Award in 2005. Throughout her career, she remained involved with music, singing in several different bands, such as Holy Water and Whiskey, and other western and folk groups.
