Scope and Contents

The Norma Yerkes papers date from 1951 to 1974 and measure 0.50 linear inches. The papers comprise of correspondence from Norma Yerkes of Toldeo, Iowa to her lifelong friend Mabel Desmith Powers, an Iowa-born St. Petersburg, Florida resident. The collection additionally includes newspaper clippings recording Norma Yerkes's collection of rocks, the death of Harland Yerkes (Norma Yerkes's spouse), and the graduation of their son, Raymond, from Harvard Medical School. The letters recount details of daily life, political events, childhood memories, and Norma Yerkes's family and friends. The letters are in chronological order with most typed or in legible handwriting.

Biographical / Historical

Norma Jennish Yerkes was born August 5, 1901 to William and Jennie Hering Jennish in Waterloo, Iowa. She was raised in Waterloo and graduated from West Waterloo High School in 1919. After graduation, Yerkes was employed as a bookkeeper by the Commercial Bank in Waterloo and later Merchants National Bank in Cedar Rapids. She married Harland Yerkes of Vinton, Iowa on December 25, 1921.

Norma Yerkes also had several additional hobbies and interests. She served as president of the Women's Club, a member of the Order of Eastern Star and American Legion Auxiliary. Norma Yerkes also pursued the history of the State Juvenile Home in Toledo, the history of the Methodist Church in Toledo, and the early history of the Mesquakie Indians. Perhaps most notably, Norma Yerkes was an avid rock collector with over 500 rocks and stones displayed in her home.

Norma and Harland Yerkes had three children, Catherine, Russell, and Dr. Raymond Yerkes. Russell was killed in the Philippines in 1952 during the Korean War, an event recounted in the letters. Norma Yerkes died on November 3, 1978.
