Scope and Contents

The Kara Mollano papers date from 2005 and measure 0.25 linear inches. They contain her 2005 Master's thesis about the 1967 plan by the Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) and Iowa State Highway Commission to improve U.S. 61 in Fort Madison by re-routing the highway through the southwest corner of the city. These plans were meant to improve traffic conditions and ease of access to the city, but at the expense of the effected neighborhood, whose residents would be forced to relocate. These residents were largely Black, Mexican, and/or poor.
