Cragg, William and G. F. Schaad. Poison and Liqiuor Register, Dakota City, Iowa, 1882-1903
The first part of this ledger is a copy of the law passed in 1880 regarding the prohibition against selling liquor and poisons in Iowa, excepting pharamacists or doctors. This law was repealed in 1882 but there were local options, and apparently this store in Dakota City chose to continue registering their sales. The ledger is comprised of hundreds of entries for sales of poisons and liquors includes date, quantity, name of poison or liquor, purchaster's statement of intended use, for whom, his name or signature, address, name of dispenser, and druggist's note. Most patrons named medicinal as the use for the liquor. The poisons were generally to eliminate pests, with some medicinal uses for animals. One such entry reads simply "horses." Sometimes the poisons are listed with the liquors, sometimes not, making for a general but not complete chronological order. Black leather spine with brown cloth boards. Acquired with Enrich Iowa funds.
