This poem was composed for Bob Cobbing/Writers Forum Exhibition at Ceolfrith Sunderland. The writing on the recto of this poem, 'And North East,' is visible on the verso as 'IRA Want Athos.' In Greek mythology, Athos was one of the Gigantes. He threw a mountain at Zeus, who knocked it to the ground near Macedonia. The mountain became the holy peak of Mount Athos, an ancient monastic state. -- Source of annotation: Marvin or Ruth Sackner.

Antiuniversity of London / Houedard, Dom Sylvester; Farquharson R., 1972

 Item
Identifier: CC-48312-69337
Scope and Contents This piece is based upon the slash-dash-bracket alphabet by Robin Farquharson as modified by Dom Sylvester Houedard. As recounted by Frater Choronzon at a meeting of the Chaos Society in 1990, the late Dr Robin Farquharson was one of the most gifted individuals it has ever been my privilege to know. His doctorate for original work on the Theory of Voting ('psephology' as it's called in the trade) was awarded by the University of Oxford in 1958, and he won the Monograph Prize of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences for related work in 1961. At the time when I met him in 1968 he had recently been stripped of his post as a Senior Research Fellow ('Don') in Management Studies at Churchill College, Cambridge. I first encountered him at a meeting of the 'Anti-University'. This was a loose knit structure which operated from a series of short-term addresses. Its primary function was to promote serious academic work into subject areas which were considered to be neglected by...

Apophatic Art / Houedard, Dom Sylvester., 1966

 Item
Identifier: CC-09702-9895
Scope and Contents

The number 9 is substituted for all the letters "n" of the words in this text. Curt Cloninger in his Master of Fine Arts in Studio Arts thesis wrote about (Maine College of Arts 2008) "Apophatic Art: Enacting Exhaustive Language / Exhausting Enacted Language." He defined Apophatic Writiing: Apophatic writing in the Christian tradition is a way of talking about God that seeks to properly revere him by not overly delimiting him. "Apophasis' is negation and "kataphasis' is affirmation. Since God is beyond all we can affirm about him, in order to more accurately describe him, we must balance our affirmations with reverent negations. Theologian Bruce Ellis Benson (2002) explains, "One affirms something but denies it, because to affirm it too strongly would be heretical and to deny it completely would also be heretical." -- Source of annotation: Marvin or Ruth Sackner.

Scope and Contents This issue includes a Glyn Pursglove's essay, "An Introduction to Concrete Poetry." He states "The phrase 'Concrete Poetry' is bandied about a great deal in a way which seems to suggest that all those to whom it is applied are part of a conscious, united movement, and that they are artists whose work is dictated by a set of common and explicit principles. As anyone with any understanding of artistic 'movements' will readily imagine, this is a superficial and misleading idea. Certainly there have been plenty of explicit statements by some of the poets involved but these have, naturally, attracted as many opponents as supporters. One of the most important of such statements was 'POSITION 1 of International (Movement) for Spatial Poetries" organised by, among others, Pierre Gamier. This was not quite a manifesto, in the sense of a document proclaiming plans for the future, but rather a formalisation of a situation. Gamier was fully conscious of the difficulties, and his closing words...
