Purgatory and Carousels (2nd Printing) / Billera, Jau ; levy da., 1963
This is the second printing by d.a. levy's press; the first printing had the imprint, The Free Lance Poets & Prose Workshop. The Renegade Press edition includes an abstract print and the cover that was made by levy. Billera had a Cleveland radio program on WCLV and editied "Podium" in the mid-1960's. Billera committed suicide in 1981 in his sealed automobile with the motor running from carbon monoxide poisoning. The book also includes reprints of levy's introductory essay to 306, 5 Cleveland Poems, you murders with your indifference, and the "IN" Group. Random Sightings (The Egyptian Stroboscope Sessions), 2000
Most of the copies of the first printing in an edition of 108 copies were confiscated by the Cleveland Police in the notorious raid of Jim Lowell's book store in 1966. The second printing by grass coin publishing in 1967 had a different cover, a modified title page & did not contain an index section. This third posthumous printing presented here is a reproduction of the original, the unique page from the second edition as well as the original manuscript pages. In a reprinted mimeographed letter from levy to neal emerson, editor of Love, levy writes: "...- just sent you 2lbs of poetry mags etc & wish you luck - i cant take it here much longer & hope ill be leaving the city in one way or another very soon - i just wan to let you know that when you get busted for trying to communicate, when you get busted for trying to love... some catholic is going to get a nice paying promotion into the city hierarchy - so your blood wasnt a complete waste - yrs in the slow death d.a. levy.Some of these poems were published previously, e.g., red lady, the madiason envelope, etc.According to a letter from Alan Horvath, the publisher of this book, most copies including the Sackner copy were printed with a blue flip cover with a red image.
