This page refers to the 9/11 attack by terrorists on NYC and the twin towers of the World Trade Center. The poem reads, "paster on to the present - see it is nine eleven - the time singular - which broke down the illusion." The image depicts a four part grid, one of which is a fragment from a postcard that is also depicted in Phillips' Postcards of the 20th Century. This poem written for Salman Rushdie and printed in Merely Connect is composed of eight blue-grey and purple horizintal bands of color. The purple may relate to the purple centerpiece of the Indian flag, blue-grey the emotional despair of Rushdie's death sentence. The calligraphy may be Salman?, Love?, etc. but are not readily decipherible. Phillips' poem: "live the poetry, merely understand verse necessity, merely connect, butterfly triumph, poetry - let me go on, poets define value." This was the first purchase by the Sackners of a Tom Phillips artwork. It was acquired fom Galerie Bama in Paris. According to the colophon, this is a suite of 12 lithographs bvased on Brahms Opus 45. The images were derived from postcards collected by Phillips in Germany and have inset texts, which are treated fragments of the novel 'A Human Document' by W H Mallock, and titles quoting the textural material of the Requiem itself. One of the prints has been framed and hangs in the first floor hallway. In the BBC Music magazine (JUne 2013), comments about the CD of the month Brahms's 'A German Requiem' included the following.This Requiem does not mention Jesus nor is there a fire-breathing 'Dies Irae' striking fear into souls of potentially errant isteners!
