Biography

Patrick Joseph Murphy was born August 24, 1959 in Dubuque, Iowa, where he grew up and graduated from Wahlert High School. He earned a bachelors degree in communications, political science, and hisotory from Loras College. Murphy won a special election to the Iowa House in 1989 as a Democrat. He represented parts of the Dubuque area for twelve terms, ending in 2015. From 2003-2007, he served as Speaker of the House. In 2014, Murphy won the Democratic nomination for Iowa's first congressional district, which had been represented by the retiring Bruce Braley. Murphy lost that race to Rod Blum.
