A Proposal for the Grounds of the Serpentine Gallery, 1997
This book and the commission to Finlay were dedicated to Diana, Princess of Wales by the Board of Trustees and Staff of the Serpentine Gallery. The first fold-out page consists of the architectural layout and the second a print enumerating trees in the area arranged as a mandala dedicated to Diana in its center. The commission itself consisted of poetic engravings for eight benches and a tree-plaque placed in the meadow around the Sepentine. The captions on these objects are brief sentences adapted from writings, rendered in Latin and English, on Arcadia by Virgil. -- Source of annotation: Marvin or Ruth Sackner.

This is an extensive architectural project for a German bank that was planned from the onset of construction. It consisted of six carved, lettered stone sculptures for the facade, poetic wall paintings, poems on glass doors, and a floor poem. The concrete and picture poems were modified from earlier published versions, e.g., wave/rock, star, evening will come, sackcloth n., wild flower n. According to this book, published to commemorate Christmas 2000, HUFF, n. is defined as follows: a fit of anger, sulks, or offended dignity (Chambers); a fit of petulance caused by an affront (Oxford); an armed withdrawal (IHF). At this exhibition, three catalogues were published and enclosed within a single slipcase. The first book that depicts the print, "Marine" on its cover, is apparently a reprinting of a catalogue laid out by Hansjorg Mayer which originated at the Kunsthalle Basel in 1990. It contains an introductory essay by Thomas Kellein. It features reproductions of publications by Finlay's Wild Hawthorn Press as well as photographic views of Stoneypath. The second book that depicts the print, "star steer" on its cover, features Finlay's stone, glass, and neon sculptures. It contains critical essays by Peter Weiermair and Stephen Bann. One page has a poem by Hoderlin translated by Harry Gilonis, opposite a photograph of a contemplative Finlay, sitting on a bench in the garden just outside his house, The poem reads, "At peace the ploughman sits outside his cottage in the shade... The proposal was done for a private garden in Provence. The image on the cover is a wild boar. The print depicts a circular post cast in bronze, with plain and rusticated bands alternating, the pattern adapted from Sebastiano Serli's Five Books of Architecture. A bollard is a thick low post on a wharf which is used to moor ships with a rope. This book depicts bollards for a decoration of a Scottish Shopping Centre, The Gyle - Edinburgh. The book begins with a chronology listing Hitler's rise to power and the relation of the building in Munich called Ehrentempel. The end papers consist of a photograph of the building. The right sided pages depict drawings of wild flowers, the left sided the names of the flowers.
