This was the first artist book exhibition that the Sackners attended. It made a major impact on them in terms of the their subsequent direction in collecting. The catalog includes reproductions of Kenneth Snelson's drawings for the sculpture, Forest Devil, the maquette of which is held by the Sackners. This catalogue was in the collection of Jan van der Marck, director of the MOCA and curator of the exhibition. He wrote in the introduction, "What characterizes the majority of works in this exhibition is their complex permutation of words and images. The resulting visual language tends towards poetic rather than communicative functions." Van der Marck also wrote the biographies of the artists. This exhibition deals with poetry off the page onto the walls of the gallery, including sculptures, paintings, films and videos. Curated by Jay Sanders and Charles Bernstein, the works "offer a constellation of intellectually compelling, poetically dense, visually dazzling works that represent some of the most exciting efforts in current practice." Catalogue essays were contributed by Jay Sanders and Charles Bernstein. Johanna Drucker's text is titled, "Plastic Modalities: Emerging Sentience." Tom Phillips' text is from "Notes on A Humument." The Sackners lent eight original pages from "A Humument."
